I want to preface this by acknowledging that there are a lot of people writing on Substack (this platform) with whose views I do not agree (to put it mildly). However, I’m not paying Substack anything and as of now, none of you are either, at least to access my stuff. Having just recently moved here, I’m not inclined to move again unless something more drastic happens, and honestly I don’t believe that any newsletter platform is going to be free of idiots trying to monetize their idiot thoughts. Substack does not seem particularly worried about people spreading harmful information on them, so that is a concern, but for the moment we’re gonna stay here. However! If you have concerns, let me know. If we had a furry-native newsletter site with comparable tools…
Last month I was worried about FC and sure enough, they canceled. If you have the chance to support them, please do; putting on a con is expensive but canceling one is even more so.
So it looks like my first con will be the same as my last con: TFF, two years later. I’ve got plane tickets and a hotel room, and the location means that unless there’s an actual zombie invasion, the con is likely to go ahead. As a bonus, it’s looking even more likely that we’ll do a soft release of Unfinished Business there. Look for a cover reveal soon! Many thanks again to all the folks who supported that book over on Patreon when I was writing it (and if you want to see the current WIP, which includes some gay Robin Hood stuff, head over to the Patreon now).
If you’re going to TFF, look for me around the FurPlanet table. I’m not scheduled for any panels (though I do have a tendency to get drafted into them) because I don’t know how comfortable I’ll be in a small enclosed room, even masked. I don’t know about a lot of things at this con, but I do know that I’m looking forward to seeing people again and signing books. Maybe if the weather’s nice we can do an outdoor reading.
This month I’m doing a lot of editing on The Price of Thorns, my big fantasy book that I’m excited about. Still excited about it even through the editing process, which is good. Hope it’ll be ready for you by the end of this year. I’m also working on the aforementioned Robin Hood fanfic and also the ongoing Ty Game sequel.
I finally watched the second season of The Morning Show (Apple TV+). I love all the actors in it, and a lot of the writing, but there were a couple weird turns in the final episode that I didn’t quite follow along with. Still, I’d continue to recommend it. I’m interested to see what happens with a third season, if there will be one.
We watched the Folding Ideas documentary about NFTs on YouTube (“Line Goes Up: The Problem with NFTs”), and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. The host explores the foundation that NFTs are built on, and the foundation of the financial markets below that, and explains why it’s even more dangerous than you might’ve thought if you only know NFTs as a scam that eats up the power of a small industrialized nation.
Otherwise we’ve been watching Big Mouth (Netflix), which continues to be excellent, and re-watching some comfort TV. I’m introducing our young boyfriend to Cheers and he’s showing me the first season of Scream Queens (I watched the second with them). And I’m re-watching Scrubs, which is still really good, maybe top five sitcoms all time for me.
(Top five sitcoms? It’s so hard because it’s time-dependent. I think The Good Place for sure, Cheers for sure, The Office, and Scrubs. I love Friends but not sure it holds up; Parks and Rec is up there too, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but I’m not sure how I’d order them. And that’s not even including the animated ones. The first eight or nine seasons of The Simpsons I would put up against any other TV show. What are your favorites, current or all-time?)
Stay safe everyone. If I don’t see you at TFF, then I hope I’ll see you at another convention this year, or maybe next!
February 2022 Dispatch
I just finished Weasel Presents and was a little curious about the novel teased at the end of "Stolen Away." I know you've been hip deep in your contemporary stuff for quite some time (which I've enjoyed), but I'm excited to see more fantasy work, whether or not its Argaea. Just wondering if there are plans to give Coryn's story some resolution (or if it's out there already and I've just missed it).
I'll be at TFF as well! Looking forward to hopefully running into you there!
